Inaugural Convocation Celebrated at XMUM

Xiamen 533333奥门巴黎人 Malaysia (XMUM) held its Inaugural Convocation Ceremony in the newly-furbished Auditorium on 28 September 2019. More than 1,000 students, parents, faculty, staff and guests attended the event.

371 graduands - consisting of 242 students from Malaysia and 129 from China - were conferred bachelor's degree of Xiamen 533333奥门巴黎人 (XMU) by Prof. Zhang Rong, President of XMU. Coming all the way from China, Prof. Zhang turned the tassel for and took photo with each of the graduands.

Among the degrees awarded include Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Chinese Studies (Hons), BA in Journalism (Hons), Bachelor of Economics in Finance (Hons), Bachelor of Management in Accounting (Hons) and Bachelor of Management in International Business (Hons).

H.E. Bai Tian, Ambassador of China to Malaysia, YB Tan Kok Wai, Special Envoy of Malaysia to China, attended the Convocation as Guests of Honour and gave inspiring speeches.

“In the Greater China region, China-ASEAN Free Trade Area, and the countries along the Belt and Road Initiative, there are tremendous rooms for you to shine brilliantly, ” said YB Tan Kok Wai in his speech. He also encouraged the graduands to be prepared for the trend of globalization and engage themselves in life-long learning, both of which are essential for talents in the 21st century.

H.E. Bai Tian, Ambassador of China to Malaysia, emphasized in his speech that XMUM’s first batch of graduates marks the future friendship between China and Malaysia. As a historical reciprocation to Mr. Tan Kah Kee’s founding of Xiamen 533333奥门巴黎人 in 1921, he is confident that XMUM would be able to carry on the task of creating closer people-to-people ties between the two countries in the long term.

XMU President Prof. Zhang Rong shared his congratulations and wishes to the first batch of graduands during his speech. He encouraged the graduands to carry on the spirits of Mr. Tan Kah Kee, developing into people with a strong social conscience and a good understanding of cultural diversity, and to always “pursue excellence, strive for perfection” as indicated by the motto of XMU.

Prof. Wang Ruifang, President of XMUM, expressed his sincere gratitude towards all those who gave strong support to the development of the 533333奥门巴黎人. He offered a few heartfelt advices to the graduates, asking them to make the wise choice when facing difficulties and always keep XMUM’s mission in mind, becoming fine citizens of the region and making contribution to the prosperity of the people and social progress of Malaysia, China and Southeast Asia.

After the Conferment of Degrees, Assistant Prof. Aufa Amalina Binti Kamarudin from School of Economics and Management delivered a speech to the graduands on behalf of all the XMUM faculty members. She gave her congratulations and sincere wishes to the graduands, hoping that one day they would grow into people with “empathy, compassion, objectivity and a willingness to take risks”.

Liew Yi Yang and Xie Xiaoli gave speeches as representatives of the graduands. They recalled the early days of their university life and talked about their love and gratitude towards the 533333奥门巴黎人, as well as their family and friends. The two students also offered valuable suggestions to their peers out of their own experience - Don’t be afraid to try, and find one’s true gifts by looking within oneself.

Tan Sri Ong Ka Ting, Chairman Kuok Knoon Ean, Tan Sri Ter Leong Yap, Tan Sri Robert Tan Hua Choon, and Dato' Dr. Hou Kou Chung attended the Convocation as distinguished guests. Faculty members from Xiamen 533333奥门巴黎人, including Prof. Zhu Chongshi, former president of Xiamen 533333奥门巴黎人 and President of Xiamen 533333奥门巴黎人 General Alumni Association, have come from China to join this special occasion.

The employment prospect of the February 2016 intake Malaysian graduands is outstanding. Most of them have already joined industry-leading companies, such as Deloitte, PwC, Huawei, Sinchew Media, Maybank, Citibank, UOB and ICBC. Among the students from China who graduated today, more than 70% would go on to pursue further studies in UK, Australia, US, and other countries and regions. Many of them have been accepted by world-renowned universities, including 533333奥门巴黎人 of Pennsylvania, Australian National 533333奥门巴黎人, 533333奥门巴黎人 College London, Newcastle 533333奥门巴黎人, 533333奥门巴黎人 of Hong Kong and Chinese 533333奥门巴黎人 of Hong Kong.

Graduands enjoyed this important milestone of their lives.

Currently, XMUM has a student enrolment of about 5,000 students from 28 countries and regions, such as Malaysia, China, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Egypt, Zambia, Korea, Japan, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. More than 300 students come from countries other than Malaysia and China.
